ASHEVILLE, North Carolina – Two teens were killed early Monday morning when they lost control of their car on a winding road just south of Asheville, North Carolina.

The accident also injured five others along Overlook Road, a road notorious for its wrecks but often used as a shortcut between Hendersonville and Long Shoals roads.

Stephen Rial Mills and Nicholas Pearce Montagna, both 18, died shortly after 12:30 A.M.  A small amount of marijuana as well as some prescription medications were found in the vehicle but police are still unsure if either teen was under the influence at the time of the accident.

While no obvious signs of intoxication among the passengers were noted, police will not know for some time whether the teens were under the influence. Blood toxicology screens can take several weeks, though blood alcohol tests should be back by the end of this week.

In the meanwhile, police are investigating the drugs found in the vehicle. It is still unknown who they belonged to and whether any of the occupants had been using them in the events leading up to the accident. If they were in fact intoxicated, and it can be determined that this in some way contributed to the accident, those involved could face charges.

Whether or not drugs played a part in this tragedy, Overlook Road’s unforgiving terrain certainly did as it has in hundreds of previous accidents over the years.  Despite sharp, winding curves and virtually no shoulder, the 35 MPH speed limit is often exceeded and police estimate the teens in Monday’s accident were traveling between 65-70 MPH.
