Posted in HAWAII COUNTY, SOUTH KOHALA – Two drivers involved in a fatal Sunday morning crash in South Kohala have been arrested.
Authorities say speed and alcohol were factors in the crash that killed Kauaheaheokaua Lactaoen, 19, of Kamuela, and Rocky P. Pactol, 18, of Honokaa, early Sunday morning near the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road.
The victims were passengers in a 2000 Honda two-door sedan driven by a 19-year-old Paauilo man. A 40-year-old Kamuela man driving a 2006 Ford F350 pickup crashed into the Honda at the intersection, ejecting the victims – who were not wearing seat belts – from the vehicle.
The driver of the Honda, one of his passengers and the driver of the pickup were transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital. Lactaoen died at the scene of the accident just after 1 a.m., while Pactol died shortly before 4 a.m.
The Honda driver was arrested for DUI, suspicion of two counts of negligent homicide, and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. He was listed in stable condition and released from police custody pending further investigation.
The driver of the Ford truck was also arrested for DUI and released pending the results of the investigation. He was released from hospital care as well.
