Truck-Motorcycle Accident on Oregon Highway Ends in One Fatality and One Injury

OREGON – An Oregon highway accident has claimed the life of one woman and left another critically injured.

The incident occurred on Highway 7 at around 12:30 p.m. Monday. Two couples were heading north on Highway 7 riding in a group of four motorcycles when a truck driver crashed into two of the bikes.

The truck driver, Derrick A. Coates, 24, of Baker City, was driving a 1994 Nissan pickup when he passed the lead motorcycle, then crossed the center line, hitting the second and third motorcycles. The fourth motorcycle did not get hit.

Leta Louise Currey, 46, of Pendleton, was driving the second motorcycle and died at the scene of the accident. Joanne Mohrland, 53, of Walla Walla, Washington, was injured in the crash and transported by LifeFlight to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.

Coates was also injured but did not require hospitalization.

The motorcyclists were wearing helmets.
