Leopard Dies Following Accident at Columbus, OH Zoo

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It is a sad day in Columbus, OH after an innocent life was cut short. An accident at a city zoo has left a leopard dead after he had survived a previous accident that took the lives of 48 exotic animals.
The male leopard, which was being kept at the Columbus Zoo in quarantine since October, was euthanized Sunday, Jan. 29 after being crushed by a gate.
A zookeeper was getting ready to feed the leopard and clean its cage and had to move the cat into an adjoining cage. As he was pulling a lever to lower the gate between the two cages, the leopard ran underneath and was hit by the gate on his neck.
As a result, the leopard suffered a spinal cord injury and had to be put to sleep.
“Because this animal had a history of being improperly fed, its bones were left in a permanently weakened state,” said veterinarian Tony Forshey. “In addition, it had a previously undetected genetic malformation to its cervical vertebrae [that was discovered after the incident by X-ray], which also left its spine extremely weak.”
Forshey went on to say that the leopard would have never survived the injury because of his conditions, whereas a healthy animal would have.
“Unfortunately, the combination of these factors meant that the leopard wasn’t able to survive an injury that would have had little effect on a normal, healthy animal,” he added
The leopard, along with six other animals, survived an incident in which their previous owner, Terry Thompson, released dozens of wild animals on his farm in Zanesville before shooting himself to death.
Authorities shot and killed 48 of the animals that were unleashed in order to prevent the public from getting hurt. The rest were taken to the zoo.
Although this tragic accident was very sad, worse incidents are happening right now to innocent people Anyone who has been involved in an accident, be it a car crash, medical malpractice incident or slip and fall, is entitled to seek legal help. Accident Survivor Lucky to be Alive

It hasn’t even been a full year since Andrew Linn crashed his car into a fence. The incident might at first glance just appear to be a regular car accident, but the crash itself was not the worst of it.
After striking the fence, Linn was impaled by a metal pole that entered his mouth and went through the back of his neck. This freak accident would most likely allow for no survivors, but Linn is still with us today and is able to talk about the tragic incident that almost claimed his life.
Although he does not remember much of what happened on November 29, 2010, the night of the crash, Linn regards his x-ray photos in disbelief, almost as if the x-rays could solidify the reality of the accident.
“You can see on my nose it came in here, went through and came out the back here,” said Linn, gazing at an x-ray of his skull, showing where the metal pole was imbedded.
What makes everything all the more unreal is that Linn saw these x-rays for the first time on Tuesday morning.
He deduces that he probably became unconscious when his car crashed on that night in November. Linn recounts passing between two utility poles, crossing the street and jumping the curb of the sidewalk before hitting a trailer in a neighbor’s yard, but then the rest is a blur.
The doctor who operated on Linn, Dr. Jay Coates, said that if the pole had struck Linn just a few centimeters in either direction, he would have bled to death.
Miraculously, the pole did not puncture any major vessels and now Linn lives to tell the outrageous tale.
His recovery was not easy, however. Linn remembers about how difficult it was relearning how to do some of the simplest things that anyone else would take for granted.
“The hardest thing has been opening the mouth and learning how to eat and swallow. Drinking is really difficult,” confessed Linn.
After being given a second chance at life, Linn says he now lives each day to the fullest.
“I have a second chance. I spend a lot of time with my kids. I love my wife and my kids, my family, my parents, my siblings. I just make the most of everything,” he said.
To those who believe in miracles, it might seem as though Linn has a guardian angel at his side, as this is not his first brush with death.
In 2008, Linn’s car was struck when a driver ran a stop sign, leaving him with back and neck injuries, and in 2009, he was honorably discharged from the Marines after serving in Iraq.
