The accident took place on Tuesday night on U.S. Highway 83, near the U.S.-Mexican border.

A van transporting 19 people rolled over after fleeing from U.S. Border Patrol agents, leading to the death of nine passengers and causing six others to sustain injuries.

Three other passengers fled the scene of the crash, but two were later caught. The driver of the van has yet to be apprehended.

Authorities believe all the passengers were immigrants being smuggled into the country illegally. When border patrol stopped the van, the driver sped off and later crashed.

Although the cause of the accident remains unknown, authorities suspect it was the result of overcrowding the vehicle, which was only designed to transport seven people.

This is the second accident to take place in the same week involving undocumented immigrants. On Monday, a van rolled over in La Joya, Texas, fatally injuring one person and sending 17 others to the hospital. That vehicle was also transporting illegal immigrants.
