FLORIDA – Former astronaut Alan “Dex” Poindexter died Sunday after sustaining injuries in a jet ski accident.
Poindexter, 50, a space shuttle commander who flew twice into space, died Sunday after being involved in a jet ski accident near Little Sabine Bay off of Pensacola Beach. He was with his two sons when the accident occurred.
Poindexter and his 21-year-old son were riding on one jet ski while his older son was on a separate one. According to local ABC affiliate WEAR, Poindexter had been sitting still in the water when his older son’s jet ski crashed into him.
Immediately following the incident, Poindexter was transported to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, where he later died of his injuries.
NASA issued a statement on Facebook after Poindexter’s death Sunday evening.
“The NASA family was sad to learn of the passing of our former friend, and colleague Alan Poindexter who was killed today during a jet ski accident in Florida,” read the statement. “Our thought and hearts are with his family.”
