The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the victims as 31-year-old Joseph Davis and 57-year-old Matthew Held, both of Hillsboro.

The men died after their car rear-ended a tractor-trailer just after 1 a.m. Saturday on Old Highway M, east of Lemay Ferry Road.

According to police, the driver of the tractor-trailer was backing up to turn into a private driveway when the victims’ car rear-ended the truck.

Davis and Held were transported to a St. Louis hospital following the incident, where they later died.

Another occupant in the vehicle sustained moderate injuries.

The incident happened shortly after 5:30 p.m., when a Jeep that was heading westbound rear-ended a pickup truck that was attempting to make a left turn into a private driveway. James Thomas Sankovitch, 21, of Bark River, was driving a 2006 Chevy pickup truck when his vehicle was struck from behind by a 1998 Jeep being driven by Steven Paul Gurgall, 20, of Hermansville.
