New Jersey turnpike accidents end in two fatalities

April 7th, 2011    Posted in Accident News

NEW JERSEY – Two people were killed in accidents on the New Jersey Turnpike on Monday during rush hour traffic.

The first incident happened at around 6:15 a.m. when the driver of a tractor-trailer that was heading southbound struck a pedestrian in Barrington. The second accident occurred just three hours later in the traffic jam that was caused by the first accident.

According to authorities, weather did not appear to be a factor influencing either incident, although it had been remaining.

In the first accident, the truck driver initially believed he had hit a deer and pulled over to make sure it was alright. He discovered it was a person who was seriously injured. The victim is believed to be a 49-year-old man from Barrington that might have been attempting suicide by running into traffic.

The victim has yet to be identified pending further investigation of the incident and family notification. The name of the truck driver was not released either.

The incident caused the lanes of the highway to be closed between Exits 3 and 4 and drivers were reportedly diverted off the turnpike to I-295, leading to even more delays. The highway opened back up in the early afternoon.

After the areas near the incident on the turnpike were closed, the second accident occurred. Another tractor-trailer crashed into a car in Mount Laurel around 9 a.m., causing the trailer to flip over the median and dump its cargo of vegetables.

The driver, Michael A. Richardson, 49, of Trenton, was not injured, but the driver of the other car, Chandrapith Vatsyayana, 51, of Holland, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead shortly following the incident. The victim had been on her way to work in Mount Laurel.

Tragic accidents like these can happen at any time and in any place, regardless of how safe people are driving.
