Lancaster Man Dies in Head-on Collision
May 23rd, 2013
Posted in Accident News
Lancaster, PA- Two people were hospitalized and one man was killed after a head-on collision early Sunday morning in Lancaster.
The accident occurred just after midnight Sunday on Route 30 and Prospect Road. According to authorities, the driver of a Hyundai Elantra, a 27 year-old woman, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 30.
The Hyundai driver continued driving in the westbound lanes until she eventually collided with a Ford Taurus carrying two passengers, the Patriot News reported.
When police arrived both passengers in the Taurus, and the driver of the Hyundai were trapped inside their vehicles. The Hyundai driver and the male passenger of the Taurus were both unresponsive when emergency crews arrived. Once they were extricated all three of those injured were taken to Lancaster General Hospital.
The Taurus passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital, but police have not released his identity. Both drivers remained hospitalized Monday.
Route 30 was closed for several hours while the accident was investigated. Police are not certain why the Hyundai driver was traveling in the wrong lane, but they are not ruling drugs or alcohol as a possible cause of the collision.
Head-on collisions are among the most injurious and deadly accidents a person can be involved in, and the majority of these head-on, wrong-way collisions are caused by drunken drivers.Data from the National Traffic Safety Board indicates that 60 percent of wrong-way crashes are caused by drunken drivers.
In press conference last year where the NTSB was advocating for ignition interlock devices for first time DUI offenders, Deborah Hersman, the agency chairwoman said, “Wrong-way accidents are among the most deadly type of motor vehicle accidents. The first step to address the number one killer on our roads is to what has proven to be effective—use interlocks for all DWI offenders.”
Because drunk drivers cause a third of all fatal accidents nationwide the NTSB has recently suggested controversial changes to the countries drunken driving laws in order to make the roads safer. Last fall, the NTSB recommended ignition interlock devices for first offenders and earlier this month the agency recommended lowering the legal limit from .08 to .05, which they say would save 500 lives each year.
Even if the intoxicated driving laws become tougher, it still won’t prevent many of these unnecessary injuries and deaths. Most intoxicated drivers are not dissuaded by the laws, they get behind the wheel when they know they shouldn’t. They don’t care they are breaking the law, that is until they hurt someone.
When a person is injured or killed by a drunk driver, they or their family members are right to assume that the negligent driver should pay for their medical expenses, property damage and other damages.
In accident cases where a motorist was grossly negligent, the victims or their families may be entitled to significant compensation. A Lancaster accident attorney won’t let an accident victim down; by applying their skills and knowledge they won’t rest until their client is awarded a generous settlement that covers their costs and emotional distress.

Traffic Deaths in U.S. Rise to Their Highest Point Since 2008
July 25th, 2012

Traffic accidents are among the most common in the United States, but recently, the death toll has risen drastically.
According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report released on Friday, the number of traffic deaths in the first three months of 2012 increased by 13.5 percent to the highest they have been since 2008, making it the largest spike in traffic deaths for the second quarter since 1979.
Although the number of roadway deaths in the country had been steadily declining over the past seven years, NHTSA’s report revealed that roughly 7,630 people died in motor vehicle accidents in the first quarter of 2012, up from 6,720 deaths in the first quarter of 2011.
NHTSA speculates that one cause for the increase in traffic-related deaths can be attributed to a larger number of Americans driving. The administration explained that motor vehicle travel rose by roughly 9.7 billion miles, or about a 1.4 percent, in the first quarter.
Conversely, 2011 saw the lowest level of U.S. roadway travel since 2003.
An increase in the number of drivers on the road is the perfect breeding ground for motor vehicle accidents to occur. While some auto accidents can be avoided, others happen without a moment’s notice, leaving a victim scared, injured, or can possibly even take their lives.
When roadway accidents occur, it is imperative to speak to an accident lawyer to file a claim. Personal injury victims may be entitled to a large compensation for their pain and suffering and accident attorneys do whatever it takes to ensure victims obtain justice.
