BRUNSWICK, Ohio – Authorities explain the death toll from a weekend car crash in Ohio has risen to four students after an 18-year-old died Monday following serious injuries. A fifth student also was hurt in the accident.
The MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland released a statement from the victim’s family, saying senior Kevin Fox had died.
“We are grateful for the overwhelming support that the northeast Ohio community has given our family during this difficult time,” read the Fox family’s statement.
The three other students died from trauma injuries in relation to the crash. However, according to the Lorain County coroner, Dr. Stephen Evans, there was no evidence suggesting the teens were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The incident in question took place on Sunday morning, after a car carrying Fox and four other teenagers went airborne, landing on its roof at a railroad crossing. Fox, who was in the back seat, was ejected and landed in a ditch.
Fox and another deceased victim, 18-year-old driver Jeffrey Chaya, were to graduate from Brunswick High School on Sunday afternoon.
Also killed in the auto accident were Blake Bartchak, 17, and Lexi Poerner, 16. Another student, 17-year-old girl, Julia Romito, was injured, but her condition has yet to be released.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol explains the students were speeding when their vehicle hit the railroad tracks in Columbia Township. Chaya lost control of the car, hitting a ditch and tree, and then flipped over onto the road.
