MADISON, South Dakota – A South Dakota man has been accused of fatally shooting an old classmate after holding a grudge that dates back decades.
Carl Ericsson, 74, was charged with second-degree murder on Tuesday after fatally shooting retired Madison High School teacher and track coach Norman Johnson on Jan. 31.
Police believe the shooting was sparked by an old grudge Ericsson couldn’t let go of dating back to his high school days with the victim.
According to Ericsson, he went to Johnson’s house, rang the doorbell, and asked him to verify his identity before shooting him with a .45-caliber pistol.
Ericsson, who is believed to be mentally ill, said he believes he shot Johnson over something “that happened 50 years ago.”
“It was apparently in my subconscious,” he added.
Ericsson pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge back in February and requested a jury trial, but a deal was later reached to reduce the sentence to second-degree murder.
