MONTE SERENO, California – An unidentified driver was involved in a fatal car crash on Wednesday morning in Monte Sereno.

A 32-year-old man was involved in a fatal crash on Wednesday just after midnight, which shut down Highway 9 in both directions until roughly 5 a.m.

The victim was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Camaro westbound on Highway 9 between Rose and Ridgecrest avenues in Monte Sereno when his car hit a tree and caught fire.

The driver knocked down a small tree then collided with a larger one. The force of the hit caused the vehicle’s engine to catch on fire.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department and paramedics responded to the scene and extinguished the fire but, unfortunately, the driver was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

An investigation is currently underway into the nature of the accident. Police are not releasing any more information pertaining to the case until the victim’s family has been notified. Authorities do not know as of yet if alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor to the crash.

According to police spokesman Sgt. Kerry Harris, there have already been eight collisions on Highway 9 since February of 2009 and two were fatalities.

“Traffic enforcement on Highway 9 has been a priority for the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department and will continue to be as we hope to abate tragic situations such as this one,” Harris said.
