Rockcastle County, Virginia – A seven-year old girl from Mount Vernon died on Sunday from injuries sustained from a two car crash in Rockcastle County.
According to authorities, the incident occurred just after 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Jody Hayes, 23, of Brodhead, was driving a 1989 Ford Thunderbird westbound on U.S. 150 when she decided to make a left turn onto Maretburg Road. Hayes got in the path of a 1990 Lincoln, being driven by Wendy Riley, 41, of Mount Vernon, and the two vehicles collided.
Hayes, along with her boyfriend Tony Hayes, 20, who was sitting in the front seat, were both wearing seat belts. Jody was not injured and Tony was already released from hospital care.
The child, Jada Hayes, who was the daughter of Tony Hayes, was sitting in the back seat without being buckled in when the car accident occurred. She was airlifted from the scene to U.K. Hospital after experiencing blunt-force trauma and died on Sunday from her injuries.
Jada Hayes’ younger brother, Malachi Hayes, 5, was also sitting in the rear of the vehicle and was also airlifted to U.K. Hospital. He has been listed in critical condition. Police said he was not restrained in the vehicle either.
A third rear seat passenger, Madison Hayes, 3, daughter of Jody Hayes, was treated and released from hospital care. She was restrained in a child safety seat when the accident occurred.
Wendy Riley and her daughter, Aubriauna Jones, 7, of Mount Vernon, were both treated and released from the hospital. Both were wearing seat belts.
