Boat Accident Under Investigation

May 15th, 2012    Posted in Accident News

SAN DIEGO, CA – A boat accident that resulted in the deaths of four competitors in the annual Newport-to-Ensenada yacht race is under investigation.

U.S. Sailing has appointed a five-person team at the request of the U.S. Coast Guard of San Diego to investigate the sinking of the Aegean off the coast of Mexico on April 26.

The incident marked the first time in the 65-year history of the race that casualties occurred. Kevin Rudolph, 53, of Manhattan Beach; William Reed Johnson, 57, of Torrance; Joseph Lester Stewart, 64, of Bradenton, Fla.; and the boat’s skipper Theo Mavromatis, 49, of Redondo Beach were killed in the boat accident.

The panel has been asked to review boat safety and equipment, while the Coast Guard conducts a separate investigation into the sinking.

Some speculate the sailboat was struck by a larger vessel, while another theory involves the sailboat hitting rocks on the shoreline of one of the Coronado Islands.

Boat accidents can be just as severe as auto accidents or workplace injuries. Safety rules also apply while in the waters and if someone is guilty of operating a vessel negligently or if there were conditions on the boat itself that rendered it unsafe, victims may be entitled to compensation.
