At a meeting between Somerville Police and Tufts officials in Feb. 2012, the intersection’s safety was discussed and improvements were made in the spring and summer in hopes of decreasing the number of accidents in the area, including adding new stop signs and repainting the crosswalk. However, in light of the recent accident, officials will be meeting again to discuss pedestrian safety around the outskirts of the campus.

Although there have been several pedestrian accidents at the intersection, according to officials, there hasn’t been a fatal accident at the intersection since 2000.

Tufts spokesperson Kim Thurler said the university has been in contact with the victim’s family and planned to work with Somerville officials moving forward.

“Tufts has reached out to City of Somerville officials to review the circumstances of this accident and ensure that we continue to work together to make the improvements needed to make this particular intersection, and the perimeter of campus generally, safer for pedestrians,” said Thurler in a statement.

The accident is still under investigation and authorities have yet to determine whether charges will be pressed against the driver of the SUV.

The accident took place around 6 p.m. along Old Florence Pulaski Road. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol Rianna L. Watson, 17, of Leoma, TN, was heading west in a GMC Envoy when her vehicle crossed the center line and crashed into a box truck that was heading east.

Watson was killed in the car accident while her passenger, Tanna J. Pesnell, 17, of Loretto, TN, was transported via helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical, where she died on Thursday. The driver of the box truck was not injured.

According to New York State Police, a car was sliced in half after crashing into several trees along a Long Island parkway Monday at around 4 a.m.  The names of the victims were not immediately released, nor were the specific details of the incident. A fifth victim was taken to an area hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries.

Bacon was driving a Nissan Maxima southbound near the West 610 Loop when he drove over a curb and lost control of the vehicle, leading it to hit train tracks, and flipping over several times.

Bacon was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

According to authorities, there was no evidence that Bacon was intoxicated. However, witnesses reported the vehicle was speeding, traveling about 90 mph at the time of the accident.

Two Hannibal residents were killed in New Mexico after the driver reportedly fell asleep while heading west on Interstate 40 just before 6 a.m.

The vehicle overturned several times and two of the five passengers in the car were ejected.

Jonathan Hart, 29, and Carla Boss, 43, of Hannibal, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Rachelle Geib, 27, and a 12-year-old girl were flown to a hospital in Albuquerque and were listed in critical condition.

A 2-year-old, who was strapped into a child safety seat, was transported to another hospital and was listed in stable condition.

According to Sparks police, Randall William Woods, 26, was walking along McCarran just west of Probasco. This particular stretch of road is very dark and Woods was struck by a vehicle. He flew 75 ft. upon impact; he was pronounced dead on the scene. An investigation revealed that Woods was partially in the road when the accident occurred.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported that the driver of a pickup truck, Dan King, 42, of Alexandria, MO was traveling on Route B when he approached the intersection. A car driven by Blaine Dehart, 78 of Iowa failed to yield at the intersection and was struck by the

King’s truck was stuck Dehart’s car on the driver’s side door. The impact of the collision pushed both vehicles into a ditch. Dehart’s car landed on its roof. King’s truck landed on the driver’s side on top of Dehart’s car.

Dehart and his passenger Gertrude Dubois, 49, died at the scene.              

King was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he is in stable condition.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a rollover accident shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday. The incident occurred on Koala Road, north of Auburn Avenue in Adelanto.

Authorities explain a green 1998 Ford Expedition had been speeding northbound along Koala Road when it rolled into the desert, ejecting Armando Martinez, 25, and two children.

According to witnesses, Martinez was thrown roughly 50 feet away from the vehicle.

Martinez died at the scene of the accident, while the children, ages seven and two, were taken to hospitals in the San Bernardino Valley for treatment. Police report the children were not biologically related to Martinez.

Authorities are investigating the incident, but have yet to find an explanation as to why Martinez veered off the road.

The names of the children have not been released.
