Ft. Lauderdale, FL- An older pedestrian crossing a busy Ft. Lauderdale street was killed on Nov. 10 after being struck by a passenger van.
The unidentified man was trying to the cross Northwest 31st Ave, around 7p.m. when he was struck. According to police, Donald Evans, 58, was traveling in the center northbound lane of Northwest 31st Ave. when he moved into the right northbound lane. As Evans moved into the right lane, Lawrence Weir had begun to cross the street and was hit by the Evans’ van.
An eyewitness told Local 10 that Weir was jaywalking and the white van did not have time to stop before striking Weir.
Evans immediately stopped after hitting Weir and cooperated with police, so far he has not been charged with any violations.
Weir was taken to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries.
Locals say that Northwest 31st Ave. is dark and has few crosswalks making it a very dangerous street for the many pedestrians. In fact nationwide, pedestrian accidents have been steadily increasing.
Pedestrians are at a disadvantage when trying to cross a busy street; they can be hard to see, especially if it is dark, have trouble finding an appropriate place to cross, and when they are hit tend to incur much more serious injuries than a person in a vehicle.
Whether an accident victim was a pedestrian, a passenger or driver of a vehicle, they deserve to have someone who will stand up for their rights. Injury victims need to feel confident that they will get the money they need to cover their costs. With a Ft. Lauderdale accident attorney on the case, the injured can worry about their recovery while their attorney worries about winning a favorable settlement.

Queens, NY- A three-car traffic accident in the early hours of Sunday morning ended in tragedy as one young woman lost her life and another woman was hospitalized.
Just before 3 a.m., Paulina Rodriguez, 24, was driving her Hyundai sedan in the Cambria Heights area of Queens. Rodriguez, was traveling north on 227th when she came to the intersection of 115th Ave. Police said she blew through the stop sign, crashing into a Honda, according the New York Daily News.
Following the initial collision, a speeding Mercedes driver plowed into Rodriguez’s sedan, fatally injuring her. The Daily News reported that Rodriguez and a 19 year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Hyundai, were both taken to Long Island Jewish hospital. Unfortunately, Rodriguez died of her injuries but the other young woman is in stable condition.
Neither the Mercedes driver nor the Honda driver required medical attention.
A witness told police that he saw Rodriguez stop at the intersection, “She inched out to look both ways and got hit,” Donovan Smallwood said.
But the Mercedes driver, Jackie Knight, disputed the eyewitness account insisting Rodriguez just kept going through the intersection. Knight however was cited for speeding.
With fatal accidents rising throughout the nation, drivers should pay careful attention when approaching intersections.
Once police determine which driver was at fault for the accident, the injury victim and the deceased’s family will be able to hire a Queens accident attorney to obtain compensation on their behalf. A financial settlement can’t ease the pain of losing a loved one or help a person heal, but it can eliminate their financial woes.
Did a Chicago Police Officer Stage an Accident?
November 16th, 2012

A Chicago police officer has been accused of staging an accident between two cars in return for $2,000 from a tow truck driver who hauled away the wrecked vehicles and billed an insurance company.
Gregory Garibay, the officer in question, is also being charged with falsifying a police report and wrongly listing the driver with the best insurance coverage as at fault so the tow truck driver would have a larger compensation.
The incidents stem back to 2007, when Garibay was assigned to the South Chicago District. After authorities uncovered his crimes, Garibay was relieved of his position after 18 years with the department.
According to an indictment against Garibay, he filed a police report stating that the driver of Toyota Avalon, who had full insurance coverage, was at fault in a traffic accident with the driver of a Toyota Camry, who had only liability insurance coverage. This would ensure that the full insurance coverage would cover part – if not all – of the damage caused by the accident, including the towing fees. The tow truck driver later paid Garibay.
In another instance, Garibay was involved in a staged accident so another insurance company would pay for damages, including the towing fees.
