Champion freestyle Canadian skier Sarah Burke is in a coma as of Tuesday night following an accident that occurred while training in the superpipe in Park City, Utah.
Burke, 29, was airlifted to a Salt Lake City hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
Peter Judge, CEO of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association, said he was unsure of what exactly happened during the incident.
“What I’ve heard, relatively directly, is that she landed a trick down in the bottom end of the pipe, and kind of bounced, from her feet to her head,” said Judge. “It wasn’t anything that looked like a catastrophic fall, so I’m a bit mystified.”
Burke, who also works as a ski coach for young women, is regarded as a strong role model and representative of the sport.
“Sarah’s a very gregarious, engaging young lady, and she’s been a great spokesperson and a great representative of our sport,” said Judge.
The halfpipe was also the site where snowboarder Kevin Pearce was critically injured in December, 2009. Pearce suffered traumatic brain injuries but recovered from his injuries and has begun snowboarding once again last month.
No further information regarding her condition is currently available.
