Fourth of July Boat Accident Claims Lives of Three Children

LONG ISLAND, NY  – Three children were killed following a boat accident Wednesday night near Long Island.

According to Nassau County police, the children were found dead inside the cabin of a boat which capsized as it was returning to shore from a fireworks show on the Fourth of July.

Authorities say 24 of the 27 people onboard were rescued, but the victims, a boy and two girls, were trapped inside the cabin as the boat sank near Oyster Bay.

Police have identified the young victims as David Aurelino, 12, Harley Treanor, 11, and Victoria Gaines, 8, of Suffolk County.

The vessel, a 34-foot yacht, was one of over 100 boats that were out on the water for the holiday. The passengers were all friends and family members.

Police don’t yet know what caused the accident.
