Dylan McDermott is finally able to attain some peace and closure after asking authorities to reopen an investigation into the death of his mother.

The actor’s mother, Diane, died in 1967 when he was just five years old. Her death was originally ruled as an accident, but thanks to McDermott’s unwavering efforts, the truth surrounding her death was finally revealed.

According to a new investigation by Connecticut police, Diane’s death was ruled a murder. She was killed by her then-boyfriend John Sponza, who lived with McDermott and his mother.

Sponza, who was the only witness to the incident, told police Diane had accidentally shot herself after picking up a gun he had been cleaning. However, McDermott remembered Sponza being extremely violent with both he and his mother.

Sponza himself was shot to death in 1972 and his body was found in the trunk of a car. Police believe Sponza’s ties to organized crime may have contributed to his death.
